I Tried 5 Dog Urine Removers for Artificial Grass – Here’s What Actually Worked

If you have dogs and artificial grass, you probably already know the struggle.

For the last few months, I’ve been battling that horrible dog urine smell that seems to linger no matter how much you rinse the grass down. At first, I thought a quick hose-off every few days would solve the problem, but once the warmer weather hit, the smell became impossible to ignore.

Some days the garden smelt completely fresh, then the sun came out and suddenly the ammonia smell hit hard again. If you know, you know.

After getting frustrated with wasting money on products that either masked the smell for a few hours or simply didn’t work, I decided to properly test different artificial grass cleaners myself.

I tried multiple products over several weeks, using them on the exact same problem areas where my dogs usually go to the toilet.

Here’s my honest experience with the products I tested and which one gave the best results.

What I Was Looking For

I didn’t want something that simply smelt nice for a few hours.

I wanted a product that:

  • Actually removed the urine smell
  • Worked on artificial grass specifically
  • Was safe for dogs
  • Didn’t damage the grass fibres
  • Lasted more than a single day
  • Was easy to use

Some products were definitely better than others.

Product 1 – Pet Clean Artificial Grass Cleaner

This was one of the first products I tried because it was marketed specifically for synthetic lawns and pet urine.

What I liked:

  • Easy spray application
  • Fresh smell initially
  • Designed specifically for artificial grass
  • Pet-friendly formula

The downside:

The fresh smell didn’t seem to last very long for me. It improved the odour temporarily, but after a day or two, especially in warmer weather, the smell started creeping back.

It worked okay for maintenance cleaning but didn’t completely solve the deeper urine smell that had built up over time.

Product 2 – Bugalugs Artificial Grass Cleaner & Disinfectant https://amzn.to/42PmKbT

This one smelt stronger straight away and definitely gave the grass a cleaner feel after application.

What I liked:

  • Nice fresh scent
  • Good disinfecting properties
  • Easy to dilute and apply
  • Made the lawn feel cleaner overall

The downside:

While it freshened the grass up well, I still found myself needing to reapply fairly often. It seemed better as a regular maintenance product rather than a complete odour eliminator.

If your smell issue is mild, this could work well, but for heavier dog urine build-up, I personally needed something stronger.

Product 3 – Trade Chemicals Kennel & Cattery Cleaner Disinfectant

Out of everything I tested, this gave me the best overall results.

Honestly, this was the first product where I noticed a genuine difference after the first proper clean.

Why it worked best for me:

  • The urine smell reduced massively after one treatment
  • The results lasted longer than the others
  • It tackled the stronger ammonia smell better
  • Worked really well after brushing into the grass fibres
  • Left the garden smelling genuinely clean instead of just perfumed

I used it after thoroughly hosing down the lawn first, then applied the cleaner properly into the areas my dogs use most.

After letting it sit and dry, the difference was obvious.

Even during warmer afternoons when the smell would normally return, the grass stayed noticeably fresher.

What I Learned From Testing These Products

One thing I realised quickly is that no product works miracles if the lawn hasn’t been maintained properly beforehand.

The best results came from combining:

  1. Regular rinsing
  2. Removing waste immediately
  3. Brushing the fibres frequently
  4. Applying cleaner properly into the grass
  5. Deep cleaning problem areas regularly

Simply spraying product on top without cleaning first didn’t work very well.

My Honest Verdict

After trying several artificial grass urine cleaners, the Trade Chemicals Kennel & Cattery Cleaner gave me the best overall results for strong dog urine smells.

That said, the others still have their place.

Every garden and every dog situation is different, but if you’re struggling with that stubborn artificial grass urine smell like I was, hopefully this saves you some time and money.

Final Thoughts

Dog urine smells on artificial grass can become incredibly frustrating, especially once warmer weather arrives.

I genuinely reached the point where I was considering replacing sections of the lawn before finding a cleaning routine that actually worked.

The biggest difference for me was using the right product consistently alongside proper maintenance.

If your artificial grass smells no matter how often you rinse it, you’re definitely not alone — but the good news is it can absolutely be fixed with the right approach.

Hopefully my trial-and-error experience helps someone else avoid wasting money on products that don’t deliver long-term results.
